01. Chroma: Scratching Our Own Itch With Color
Every design project at Wiby begins with a palette, and for years that meant juggling three browser tabs of color tools, none of which understood how palettes actually get used: against real text, on real backgrounds, with accessibility contrast in mind. Project Chroma started as an internal weekend build to end that juggling — a picker and palette generator that shows every candidate color doing its actual job.
The design brief was ruthless: zero onboarding. A designer should land, pick, adjust and export inside two minutes without reading anything. That constraint shaped every screen — controls appear where your eyes already are, keyboard shortcuts mirror design-tool muscle memory, and the interface itself stays nearly monochrome so the colors being judged are the only colors on stage.
Engineering Notes
Chroma runs entirely client-side — no accounts, no server round-trips, palettes encoded in the URL itself so sharing a palette is just sharing a link. Color math runs in a perceptually uniform color space, which is why its generated harmonies feel balanced instead of mathematically-correct-but-ugly.
Design Decisions That Survived
Live contrast ratios against white and dark text on every swatch (the feature we use most), palette preview on a fake landing page rather than isolated squares, and one-click export to CSS variables and design tokens — because a palette that stays in a picker tool never shipped anything.
02. What Chroma Taught Us
Building for designers made us better at building for everyone: when your users are professionally allergic to friction, every rough edge gets reported within the hour. The URL-as-state pattern and the zero-onboarding discipline have both migrated into client projects since.
It also validated our habit of testing ambitious ideas internally first. Chroma's perceptual color engine later powered palette work in two client brand systems — paid for, in effect, by a weekend experiment.
